I am lucky to give talks all over the country. I talk to educators and parents. I talk to patients. I talk to doctors. And I talk to researchers and sales teams in the pharmaceutical industry. Sometimes I’m teaching a set of skills (like how to deal with kid/work-induced stress!) and sometimes I’m telling the story of how I overcame a critical illness and learned to thrive, no matter the diagnosis.
It is true, my topics vary. But one thing remains the same – life is challenging. In fact, life likes to pitch challenges to us at fastball speeds. Nonetheless, I realize that my core message in these varying topics remains the same: no matter what life throws at you, you have a choice.
- You choose how you respond in the moment.
- You choose how you allow your thoughts to shape your feelings and actions.
- You choose to face a challenge head on or let it eat at you.
- You choose to rise up and fight for a change that matters.
In short… you choose happiness (or not).
It’s not that happiness comes easy. Of course there are going to be really tough times. And sometimes we have to ride those out. Believe me, I’ve been there. I’ve been that stressed out teacher with no break in sight. I’ve been that parent on my last nerve. I’ve been that patient looking at a diagnosis that threatened to change everything.
And there came a point in each of these situations where I had to make a choice. And those choices created outcomes in which I could thrive, or situations in which I just had to work harder and feel crummy. You have those pivotal points too – every day.
Sometimes the first step to choosing happiness starts with a little mindfulness around what it is that actually makes you happy. They can be deeply meaningful, or silly, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is it puts a smile on your face, or a little warmth in your heart… and that you look for ways to find the happiness even in the tough times.
Here are three of the things that make me happy
1) Snuggles from the little people in my world.
2) Fabulous shoes (told you they didn’t have to be serious!)
3) Music – to make me dance, to sing along to, or to drown out the thoughts when I just need a break.
As you can see, I think the option to choose happiness is a pretty powerful thing. That’s why when I was approached to be a Happiness Crusader and join over 100 women in spreading the message of #ChoosingHappiness to women around the world, I jumped at it. My inspiring friend, best-selling Publisher Linda Joy, has compiled an amazing book. Today is the official release of Inspiration for a Woman’s Soul: Choosing Happiness featuring the soul-inspiring stories of 27 amazing women who share their intimate stories of transformation. Choosing Happiness also includes Reflection Questions after each story which will empower you to integrate the vital lessons of each woman’s journey into your own life.
